Traditionally, the Santos Tour Down Under is the first pro cycling race of the UCI calendar.
Usually held towards the end of January, this year’s (2022) event was scheduled for the last week, being Friday 21st Jan to Sat 29th Jan.
However, with the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic, the event itself has been cancelled, due to international border closures and associated quarantine requirements for visiting international teams.
And a new “Festival of Cycling” will take its place. As the website exclaims: “Cycling enthusiasts, locals and visitors alike will watch as elite cyclists travel through some of the state’s most scenic backdrops during the action-packed nine-day event.”
The Santos Tour Down Under will return to Adelaide and regional South Australia in January 2023 and once again herald the start of international cycling, with the first races of the year for the men’s UCI WorldTour and women’s UCI ProTour.
Both Richie Porte and Rohan Dennis are both expected to take part in the 3 stage elite Men’s Race. There will also be a 3 stage elite Women’s Race.
During the Festival Week, there will be numerous Adult Group Rides, Family Rides and even a seven stage Virtual Rides, powered by FulGaz.
Group rides will be held daily, with different rides for different abilities.
There is a night time Criterium, BMX National Cup, Cyclo-cross, and Mountain Biking.
In fact, something for everyone. If you can get there, bring your bike and join in the fun.
